Wilderness Skills Courses

Back in 2005 I was wandering about the property - possibly checking to see if the wild plums were ripe - when the idea of hosting a wilderness skills course presented itself. The more I pondered, the more I felt that this idea, along with my desire to learn more about the 'wild' life around us, and our hope's for celebrating this land in gentle, healing ways - all seemed to fit together nicely. The problem is, I had never really engaged in learning about the natural world. I had learned to be comfortable in the woods - but not knowledgeable. I needed to find an experienced partner.

A few months later he walked through the greenhouse door. Dwayne and Shelley Logan were looking for bedding plants - but as we got talking in the garden we were soon discussing the variety of ways they were making a living on their small farm near Nesbitt - south of Brandon. As it turned out, Dwayne had been studying nature skills all his life and was beginning to look for ways to teach others. And, he had a friend Laura Reeves who had been studying and using native edible/medicinal plants all of her adult life. And so a partnership of teachers, hosts and land was formed. All we needed to complete the picture was a community of souls keen to explore with us. With a modest amount of promotion we've held courses every year since 2006.

Participants in the courses have been some who want to deepen their personal and family camping experiences, others who are concerned about a general social collapse and want better coping skills, others who want to have a unique experience with a son or daughter or sisters or spouse/partner, and others who want to heighten awareness of their surroundings - be they on a farm or in the city. So far we've appealed to beginning and intermediate learners. As the community of souls grows, we'll diversify the offerings. Please feel free to inquire if you have questions.

Please let me, David, know if you're interested. Click on the links on the left to find out more information on our courses.
