How to Birth a Farmer

due to the enormity of the task and
the elusiveness of its beginning
our denial can be excused 

for how are we
to nurture even one to be a farmer when
so many are leaving behind their
once great
and all-consuming calling 

it is a spiritual thing
that sparks in a farmer
the desire to care
for a piece of this good earth 

and it is a spiritual thing
that sparks in a homemaker
the desire to acquire
the best this earth can give 

so let's say at least this much
that we will in no way diminish these sparks
or distract from these desires
and by so saying throw wide
the doors of possibility that
lead us to whatever place and
to whomever we may find in need
of our abiding inspiration

 we have begun
denial has died
a farmer was born today
